The Brain’s Packaging Problem
Microplastics are showing up in human brains. No, an 18-hour fast is not sending a tiny Roomba into your skull.
Hello Scalpelheads, it’s Kevin here…
At some point, modern adulthood became incredibly strange.
You pay taxes.
You answer emails.
You try to get eight hours of sleep.
And now apparently you also have to wonder whether your brain is slowly becoming a Tupperware container.
Welcome to 2026.
A study published in Nature Medicine examined human brain, liver, and kidney tissue and found micro- and nanoplastic concentrations were 7–30 times higher in the brain than in the liver or kidneys.
Most of what they found was polyethylene—the same family of plastic commonly used in packaging, bags, bottles, and enough other objects to make you question every decision civilization has made since 1950.
You may have also seen this headline:
“The average human brain contains 7 grams of plastic.”
That number didn't completely materialize from the wellness dimension.
Researchers reported a median concentration of roughly 4.9 milligrams of plastic per gram of brain tissue in their 2024 samples. Extrapolate that across an entire adult brain and you get roughly 7 grams.
Or about the weight of a plastic spoon.
Which is a particularly rude visual.
But there’s an important catch.
The study involved postmortem tissue, the field is still developing, measurement techniques have been questioned, and the researchers themselves did not prove these plastics caused dementia or any other disease. Later scientific commentary specifically highlighted the analytical challenges involved in accurately measuring plastics in brain tissue.
So no:
You should not stare at a plastic spoon over breakfast thinking,
"There you are, Gerald. My second frontal lobe."
But the finding is still concerning enough to take exposure seriously.
And then we have the chemicals that refuse to leave the party
Microplastics aren't the only issue.
There are also PFAS, commonly called “forever chemicals.”
PFAS and microplastics are not the same thing, despite the internet occasionally throwing every frightening chemical into one giant toxic soup.
Certain PFAS can persist in humans for years.
A 2024 systematic review estimated average human half-lives ranging from roughly 1.5–5 years for PFOA, 3.4–5.7 years for PFOS, and potentially even longer for some PFAS compounds.
Basically, some of these chemicals move into your bloodstream and approach the lease agreement like:
"Great neighborhood. We'll take it."
So how do we detox the plastic?
Here comes the annoying part.
We currently do not have a clinically proven “microplastic detox.”
There is no established supplement stack, fasting schedule, tea, powder, sauna protocol, or suspicious green liquid that has been shown in humans to walk into your brain, locate polyethylene particles, pack their bags, and escort them toward the nearest kidney.
This matters because the internet has already begun converting an interesting scientific finding into:
THE 4-STEP PLASTIC DETOX THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW
Step 1: buy my powder.
Step 2: buy another powder.
Step 3: subscribe.
Step 4: apparently become acrylic-free.
That's not where the evidence is.
“But what about deep sleep?”
This one is more interesting.
Your brain has a waste-clearance network commonly called the glymphatic system.
During sleep—particularly deeper stages of sleep—movement of cerebrospinal fluid and clearance of certain metabolic waste products appears to increase.
Human research increasingly supports an important relationship between sleep and this brain-cleaning system.
So yes:
Sleep is incredibly important for normal brain housekeeping.
But we do not currently know that getting eight hours specifically removes microplastics from your brain.
Your glymphatic system is a sanitation department.
We have not established that it has a polyethylene collection service.
Still, if you needed reason number 4,917 to stop scrolling TikTok until 2:14 AM, you're welcome.
“Okay. Then fasting?”
Fasting can influence cellular pathways involved in autophagy, the process cells use to recycle damaged components.
But the popular claim that:
“Exactly 18 hours of fasting activates autophagy and detoxifies plastic”
is much more precise than the science allows.
Human autophagy is difficult to measure, the timing varies considerably, and even recent human trials investigating fasting-related interventions are looking at cellular autophagy markers.
One recent human trial found changes in autophagy-related markers after a multi-day fasting-mimicking diet.
That's interesting.
It is not evidence that skipping breakfast removes a Dasani bottle from your hippocampus.
Same goes for NAC, milk thistle, garlic, antioxidants and the other usual suspects.
Some may have legitimate biological effects.
None have been convincingly shown to “detox microplastics from the brain” in humans.
If your microplastic protocol currently requires six capsules, three tinctures and Himalayan moss harvested during a lunar eclipse...
your wallet may be detoxifying faster than your body.
The smarter strategy: stop adding so much
If we don't yet know how efficiently the human body clears these particles once they're embedded in tissue, the highest-value move is incredibly boring:
Reduce unnecessary exposure.
You do not have to become a plastic-free monk living naked inside a glass cabin.
Focus on the big, easy wins.
1. Stop heating food in plastic
This is probably the easiest rule in this entire newsletter.
If something is going into the microwave, use:
Glass.
Ceramic.
Not the plastic takeaway container that has survived three jobs, two relationships and the Obama administration.
Heat can accelerate migration and shedding from some plastic materials.
Even if a container says “microwave safe,” that designation primarily tells you the container can tolerate microwave use—not that it magically becomes chemically inert.
Transfer the food.
It takes approximately nine seconds.
Your lasagna will cope.
2. Reconsider your bottled-water habit
Researchers examining bottled water using newer detection technology found an average of roughly 240,000 detectable micro- and nanoplastic particles per liter across the bottled-water samples they studied.
Most were nanoplastics.
This doesn't mean drinking one bottle of water will mutate you into a Lego set.
It does mean that if you drink bottled water every single day purely out of convenience, switching to filtered tap water in a stainless-steel or glass bottle is a fairly painless way to reduce one potential source.
3. If you're worried about PFAS in water, buy the right filter
Not:
“This filter has 18,000 five-star Amazon reviews and a picture of a mountain.”
Look for actual certification.
The U.S. EPA recommends looking for filtration systems certified for PFAS reduction under NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58.
Technologies that can reduce PFAS include:
activated carbon
reverse osmosis
ion exchange
And yes, you actually have to replace the filter.
That Brita cartridge you've had since the first season of Stranger Things is now an archaeological artifact.
4. Your plastic cutting board is slowly sacrificing itself into dinner
Every time you drag a knife across a plastic cutting board, microscopic pieces can be shaved from its surface.
Researchers have experimentally demonstrated microplastic release from polyethylene and polypropylene cutting boards during chopping.
If yours currently looks like Wolverine prepared chicken on it:
retire it.
A properly maintained wooden cutting board is a reasonable alternative.
You don't have to hold a funeral.
It didn't love you.
5. Check your tea bags
Some “silky” or pyramid-style tea bags are actually made partly or entirely from plastics such as nylon or PET.
One study found that steeping a plastic tea bag at brewing temperature released enormous numbers of micro- and nanoparticles under laboratory testing conditions.
Loose-leaf tea solves this problem elegantly.
And somehow makes you look 14% more sophisticated while doing absolutely nothing else.
6. Store leftovers in glass when you can
Cold food sitting briefly in plastic is not the apocalypse.
Again:
dose, temperature, material and duration matter.
The easiest habit is simply to keep several glass containers around for leftovers, particularly foods you'll later reheat.
You don't need to throw every plastic container in your house into the street tonight.
We're reducing exposure.
Not starting a domestic plastics uprising.
7. Don't obsess over microscopic sources while ignoring the obvious ones
This is where health-conscious people occasionally lose the plot.
They replace their toothbrush with sustainably harvested bamboo...
and then microwave yesterday's curry inside a scratched plastic container for four minutes.
Priorities.
If you want to reduce exposure, I'd worry first about:
hot food + plastic
drinking water
frequent bottled-water use
damaged plastic food surfaces
plastic tea bags
unnecessary single-use plastics
before launching an FBI investigation into whether your dental floss contains 0.003 grams of polymer.
And about recycling...
The recycling symbol has done some absolutely heroic public-relations work.
Because seeing three arrows on the bottom of something makes your brain think:
Excellent. The circle of life.
Except globally, only around 9% of plastic waste was ultimately recycled in 2019 according to the OECD.
About half went to landfills and roughly 19% was incinerated.
So the little triangle is sometimes less:
“I shall be reborn.”
and more:
“Good luck, everybody.”
Reducing disposable plastic in the first place remains important.
The takeaway
Here's the part worth remembering.
Microplastics have now been detected throughout the human body, including the brain.
Certain PFAS can remain in our bodies for years.
That deserves attention.
But don't let legitimate environmental-health concerns mutate into another detox industry.
We currently do not have evidence that an 18-hour fast, garlic, NAC, milk thistle or a $79 bottle labeled CELLULAR PURIFICATION MATRIX™ removes microplastics from your brain.
So rather than trying to perform chemical exorcisms after exposure:
Reduce the exposure you can control.
Don't heat food in plastic.
Use glass or stainless steel more often.
Consider filtered water.
Replace heavily damaged plastic cutting boards.
Avoid obviously plastic tea bags.
Get good sleep because your brain needs it for approximately 9,000 reasons already.
And then continue living your life.
Because the goal isn't to eliminate every molecule of plastic from modern existence.
Unless you're planning to move into the forest and communicate exclusively through smoke signals, that's probably not happening.
The goal is simply to make sure you consume less of the packaging than the food inside it.
